Amanjiwo in Borobudur.
The Amanjiwo Borobudur Hotel
The Amanjiwo Borobudur Hotel is extremely extraordinary for me.
The Amanjiwo Resort Borobudur in Magelang, Central Java
I’ve found this to be hotel super expensive, remarkably exclusive, and extremely luxurious.
It is a hotel worth visiting even once in a lifetime….
Indeed, The Amanjiwo Borobudur Hotel is worth a review.
There’s no way you should miss experiencing this hotel.
If you find this article inadequate, you can always browse the Amanjiwo’s original website, its Instagram and YouTube channel for the most updated information.
Established since 1997, the hotel has always dubbed The Best Hotel.
Due to its pricing, it is likely that not many people will be familiar with this hotel.
Let’s find out more about this hotel, shall we?
This is not a paid post though. This is a genuine post- I loved this hotel from the moment I came to know it. Yay!
The Amanjiwo is part of the Aman Group.
There are a number of Aman hotels in Indonesia in addition to the one reviewed here.
Aside from The Amanjiwo there are The Amandari, The Amankila, The Amanwana, and The Aman Villas at Nusa Dua….

Aman Villas in Nusa Dua, Bali

The hotels by the Aman Group are usually discreetly located but remain very exclusive.
Luxurious and Elegant, that’s how the locations come to be….
I’m hoping we can all have the opportunity to stay in these hotels.
The Amanjiwo in Borobudur
The Amanjiwo in Borobudur presents itself in a classical building.
It reminds me of nineteenth century European designs, other than the fundamental components which are of Indonesian origin.
While it is European in appearance, the hotel also casts local nuances of Javanese culture.
There are a total of 36 exclusive rooms to host hotel guests.
No wonder the rooms in this hotel are fully booked even when it’s not during peak season.
When viewed from a drone, The Amanjiwo Hotel looks like a small castle in the midst of green countryside.
The design is essentially simple, but exudes uniqueness and elegance.
The Amanjiwo Resort Borobudur
Simply marvellous, right?
The Amanjiwo was designed by an American architect Ed Tuutle, best known for his works of hotel architecture.
The hotel’s strategic location allows you to watch the beautiful sunrise.
So capturing sunrise and sunset isn’t uncommon for Amanjiwo guests.
They are absolute beauties!
The Amanjiwo Sunrise Sunset in Magelang *sunrise atau sunset?
The Amanjiwo is located in Majaksingi Village, Magelang, on Jalan Badrawati. This is the same road used to travel to the Borobudur Temple.
But don’t expect a gate you’d normally find in a kingdom….
The entrance doesn’t quite tell us it is the passage to a luxurious hotel.
Instead of a large road typical of a Disney Kingdom, a small road leads to the hotel.
One thing to bear in mind is that it only takes twenty minutes to get to the Borobudur Temple from the hotel.
The Amanjiwo Hotel is close to Borobudur
Be prepared for a calm atmosphere normally found in rural areas.
The hotel is surrounded by a stunning tropical forest.
Secluded from the hustle and bustle of the city, the hotel is a perfect getaway for those who desire healing and tranquillity.
Trees at the Amanjiwo
Amanjiwo means a calm and peaceful soul.
The architectural design is said to be neo-vernacular.
This is an adaptation from the Borobudur architecture.
Uniquely Buddhist and Javanese
An Amanjiwo wall with Javanese ethnic pattern
As you can see from drone photography, the design of the hotel forms a semicircle, with a domed roof that resembles the Borobudur stupa.
The Amanjiwo Borobudur consists of several parts.
The main building holds the reception area, library, restaurant, and pool club, while the thirty-six guest rooms form a semicircle around it.
The library is next to the hotel’s reception area.
Then there is a light-filled circular atrium where the ceiling rises up.
The supporting pillars are majestic, coupled with open walls that allow air to freely flow in and out.
The circulation works perfectly due to the open walls.
Some events (ceremonies?) for the preservation of temple and Javanese culture are held on the hotel premises.
Both the exterior and interior of the Amanjiwo Hotel are exquisite.
An afternoon at the Amanjiwo
All Amanjiwo rooms are feature terrazzo flooring.
The structure of the building is decorated with natural limestone, as well as black stone. Some structures also display Jogja sandstone, i.e. limestone typical of the Regency of Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta.
The view around the hotel is exceedingly attractive.
You can instantly enjoy the natural view of rice fields, while enjoying cool air from within the hotel.
On top of that, you can’t miss the spectacular views of Mount Merapi.
Better still, you could be astounded by staying in a room that directly faces the gigantic Borobudur. Of course, you need to pay extra for this special room as opposed to other rooms facing the rice fields.
Walking like a princess in this alley An Instagrammable spot
Even the passageways to the hotel are elegantly designed. Their tall walls seemingly cast spells on guests to take photos all along the passageways.
Among world celebrities who have enjoyed this hotel is David Beckham. But other famous celebs of international scale can also be named as having experienced this hotel.
Of Indonesian celebrities, only the biggest artists have stayed here.
What a beauty! Amanjiwo’s majestic building
A tall staircase leading to the main building is a magnificent structure made from solid stones rising upwards.
It is an astonishing combination of majestic European style on the exterior with Javanese ambience for the interior.
The Javanese interior includes rattan chairs of local production, gazebos, and typical Javanese divans called amben made of ethnic wood.
Just amazing!
The Owner of the Amanjiwo
A question I have always wanted to ask regards the ownership of The Amanjiwo Borobudur Hotel.
As it belongs to a group, I surmise that the owner is a company. A Google search reveals that Vladislav Doronin owns this group. Another source mentions Adrian Zecha as the owner.
The Amanjiwo has been internationally acclaimed.
Should we even be surprised?
