Turkey Travel Tips
When we go on vacation, it’s a good idea to prepare well in advance, especially if we’re traveling independently.
If you’re on a tour, it’s a different story – you can just relax and enjoy the ride. However, preparation is still important.
Here are several crucial aspects to consider when preparing for a trip to Turkey.
This includes determining the optimal timing for ticket purchases, understanding the visa application process, selecting suitable accommodations within Turkey, exploring local culinary options, identifying the ideal season to visit the country, and assessing the state of internet connectivity.
Frequently, travellers from abroad, particularly those from Indonesia, often inquire about these seemingly straightforward yet essential aspects.
It’s advisable to know some tips for a vacation in Turkey before departure. Let’s continue reading for some tips from me…
TURKEY Travel Tips
Embarking on a journey to Turkey can be a unique and possibly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for some individuals, while others may find themselves frequently traveling to Turkey for various reasons.
To ensure a seamless vacation, it’s advisable to take note of the insights I’ll share later.
The captivating photos of Turkey exude sheer beauty, consistently evoking a delightful sensation that lingers, creating an irresistible desire to revisit this enchanting country.

To keep your vacation enjoyable and comfortable, let’s check out some travel tips below.
1. Consider the Timing
When planning your trip to Turkey, consider the timing carefully…
Different months may result in varying ticket and hotel prices.
Opting for a winter journey, for example, could mean more budget-friendly costs due to the low season.
The peak periods for tourist influx in Turkey are spring and fall but be prepared for higher prices during these times.
For a smoother experience, try to secure your tickets well in advance, ideally 3-6 months before your trip. Keep an eye out for any available promotions.
Winter in Turkey offers a truly enjoyable and epic experience, and the added advantage is that it’s the low season, making prices more wallet-friendly.
Vacation Tip for Turkey in Winter: Trying out the tram is a must!
2. Crafting Itinerary
Consider crafting an itinerary, particularly if you’re exploring without a guided tour.
Ensure you include must-visit spots like Hagia Sophia, The Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace Museum, Basilica Cistern, and more.
Provide specifics on your transportation plans for each location in Turkey, making the itinerary comprehensive and easy to follow.
Stay tuned for my upcoming post where I’ll share the details of my own itinerary during my time in Turkey.

3. Figuring out how much it’ll cost to vacation in Turkey
Sorting out the dough for your Turkey trip is a big deal
Try to square away all your stay expenses upfront, so you just gotta stash some cash for grub while you’re there.
Also, set aside some funds for snagging tickets to cool spots, getting around, and grabbing souvenirs.
4. Exchanging Currency
In Turkey, they roll with the Lira (TL), and 1 TL is about Rp 2,075.
You don’t gotta stick with Lira all the time; some places take USD and EURO, but not everywhere.
Still, it’s smart to load up on Lira.
Credit cards work too, but I wouldn’t go all out on them; the bills might come back to haunt you.
You know how it goes, especially with moms who sometimes splurge a bit.
You can hit up ATMs in Turkey for cash, but there’s a fee of around 25 grand.
And when it comes to bringing cash, don’t be all precise – include some coins too.
Well, it’s not a bad idea to carry a credit card just in case things get tight.
5. Choosing Transportation
While you’re kicking it in Turkey, better hop on public transportation ’cause taxis can hit you hard in the wallet.
You got buses, metros, and trams in the mix.
Just check out the prices and routes – easy peasy, especially when you’re getting closer.
Public transport won’t break the bank in Turkey.
Buses usually run around 10 TL, metro’s like 2.3 TL, and trams won’t drain your funds either.
It’s a hoot trying out public transit there.
Get on that metro – it’s been running since 1875, believe it or not! Imagine that!
You can’t pass up that chance in Turkey.
And taking a spin on a tram in Turkey, especially in winter, is just pure fun!

6. Choosing a SIM Card and Wi-Fi
Getting a local SIM card in Turkey can cost you a bit, like 35-40 TL.
Brands like Avea, Turkcell, and Vodafone got you covered.
But when I was there last, I just slapped on an international package with Telkomsel. Easy peasy and safe.
If you’re all about that Wi-Fi life, you can usually snag it in public spots in Turkey – you know, restaurants, hotels, or cafes.
7. Securing Important Documents
Stash your crucial papers like passports, IDs, or visas in a safe spot.
If you gotta bring them along, it feels a bit dodgy.
Tours play it safe, but if you’re doing your own thing, keep photocopies handy.
Some folks tuck their real passports and important stuff in the hotel safe.
8. Mencoba Kuliner Turki
Now that you’re in Turkey, you gotta dive into some Turkish goodies, right?
Kebab, Simit bread, Baklava, Dondurma ice cream, Manti, White Bean Stew, Turkish veggies, or that OMG-worthy Turkish cheese. Haha!
Turkish Specialtys: Kebabs
If you’re up for some legit Turkish kebabs, go for the whole shebang because Turkey’s got a variety – Doner Kebab, Adana Kebab, Iskender Kebab, Shish Kebab, and Kuzu Tandir.
Manti is like Turkish ravioli, a specialty.
You chow down on it with butter, fresh veggies, yogurt, and a sprinkle of chili powder.
White Bean Stew is a hearty soup with a thick broth made from tomatoes and beans.
Feeling like trying Turkey’s legendary burger?
Head over to Kizilkalayar for the Hamburger Taksim.
Or you can also give Dondurma a shot, a Turkish ice cream that might play some tricks on you before handing it over.
And if you’re worried about not vibing with Turkish grub, pack some dried Indonesian goodies like shredded meat or dried potatoes. Heck, even throw in some instant noodles.
Now, this one’s the legendary Roti Simit – a must-try once you touch down in Turkey.
Turkish specialty: Simit bread
This is like a Turkish sweet munchie. Crazy tasty and sweet!

9. Getting a Turkish Visa
You’ve gotta think about the visa when planning to go abroad.
Turkish passport and Visa
Some visas are free, and there’s also VOA (Visa on Arrival).
There’s e-visa, and there are visas that need to be processed at the embassy.
10. Choosing a Hotel
When choosing a hotel, pick one that fits your budget so you don’t go overboard.
Also, go for a strategically located hotel, close to tourist attractions and eateries.
There are plenty of hotel options, just look them up on Traveloka or elsewhere.
From 5-star hotels to more basic ones, there’s a wide range to choose from.
It’s better to book while you’re still in Indonesia, so you don’t have to worry about it when you’re in Turkey.
11. Travel Safety Tips
Even though Turkey is considered safe, we still need to be cautious.
Avoid walking alone in isolated areas; choose crowded places.
It’s also a good idea to carry Pepper Spray in our bags.
12. Tips for Buying Souvenirs
You can find Turkish souvenirs at :
- Grand Bazaar
- Galata Tower
- Egytian Bazaar
- Kadikoy Tarsisi
- Ferikoy Antika Pazri
- Sultanahmet
It’s crucial to learn everyday Turkish language, even though many Turkish merchants can also speak Indonesian, albeit brokenly.
Vacation to Turkey: Buy souvenirs
Buy souvenirs that are easy to carry and not too heavy, so you won’t exceed the baggage limit and end up paying more.
13. Choosing Your Outfit
Make sure to set up your outfit and bag game for your time in Turkey.
I dig sling bags – easy to keep in front. Keep your clothes comfy and season-appropriate.
I’m all about keds or sneakers for shoes.
Flats could do the trick, but if the bottom is too thin, it might hurt after a long stroll.
Comfort is the name of the game!
